The Irish Nephrology Nurses Association was set up following a workshop with nephrology nurses organised by PEI in April 1998. There was an overwhelming consensus from all the groups that a forum of nephrology nurses would be relevant and beneficial.
The original purpose of INNA was mainly to exchange information with all nephrology nurses. A few meetings later a committee was set up and thanks to the energy and goodwill of the pioneers, the association slowly took shape. A constitution and steering committee were elected. The first National INNA Conference was held in the Ormonde Quay Hotel on 14th May 1999.
INNA is the most established nephrology nurses organisation in Ireland whose membership span the nephrology nursing spectrum. INNA is committed to advancing the nephrology nursing speciality and nurturing each INNA member. It is committed to creating an awareness of renal nursing amongst other professionals and our colleagues. In such a changing and dynamic environment, Nephrology Nurses need a united voice as a cohesive group now more than ever.
Our members are leaders who advocate for patients; mentor each other, all to inspire excellence. In 2005 The National Renal Strategy Review (NRSR) was commissioned by the Department of Health and Children (DoHC) following the 2001 publication of Quality and Fairness- A Health System for you. INNA had a representative on this steering group to represent its nephrology nurses.
