The Irish Nephrology Nurses Association (INNA) was established following a national workshop of nephrology nurses organised by PEI in April 1998. From this initial gathering, there was an overwhelming and shared recognition of the need for a dedicated professional forum—one that would connect nephrology nurses, strengthen their voice, and support the growing specialty of Nephrology Nursing in Ireland.
What began as an informal network focused on information-sharing quickly gathered momentum. Within a short time, a committee was formed, driven by the vision, commitment, and goodwill of the association’s pioneers.
A constitution and steering committee were established, laying the foundations for what would become a strong national organization. This journey was marked by the first INNA National Conference, held on 14 May 1999 at the Ormonde Quay Hotel—a milestone event that brought Nephrology Nurses together from across the country.
Today, INNA is the only established Nephrology Nursing organization in Ireland, with a diverse membership that reflects the full spectrum of nephrology nursing practice.
The Association is dedicated to advancing the Nephrology Nursing specialty, supporting and nurturing its members at every stage of their professional journey, and raising awareness of renal nursing among healthcare colleagues and stakeholders.
In an increasingly complex and evolving healthcare environment, Nephrology Nurses need a strong, united, and influential voice more than ever. INNA provides that voice—advocating for excellence in patient care, professional development, education, and research.
INNA members are leaders in renal care: they advocate for patients, mentor one another, and inspire excellence in practice. This leadership was formally recognized in 2005 when INNA was represented on the National Renal Strategy Review (NRSR) steering group, commissioned by the Department of Health and Children following the publication of Quality and Fairness – A Health System for You. This involvement reflected INNA’s growing influence and its commitment to shaping Nephrology services.
